The Brick
by Roulette Correspondent Debbie Gerhart
One morning a young businessman was speeding along a neighborhood street in his new Jaguar when a brick hit the side door of the car. Furious, he backed up to where a young boy stood sobbing. “What was that all about?” he said, “That’s a new car, and repairs like that are expensive.” “I’m sorry, mister,” said the boy, “but I didn’t know what else to do.” “Why would you throw a brick at my car?” “Because no one else would stop!” And, pointing to a spot between parked cars, the boy said, “It’s my brother. He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair, and I can’t lift him up. Please, mister, help me pick him up. He’ll freeze out here like this.” The stunned businessman was moved to help the brother out of the ice and snow and get them safely on their way again. “Thank you, mister, and may God bless you,” said the boy. “It’s okay, and I’m sorry I yelled like that … I didn’t know,” said the businessman, watching them roll away on the walk. And God did bless him—with a cherished message: Don’t go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick to slow you down for the important things. He never did have the dent repaired, but rather kept it as a reminder of that day and that message. God is whispering in our souls and speaking to our hearts. Sometimes we don’t take time to listen and he must resort to other ways of getting our attention. The truth is God really does care about us. If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If he carried a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning. He doesn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, sun without rain, but he does promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears and light for the way. In the same way he mixes rain with sunshine, he allows you to go through circumstances that make you grow, mature, flourish and become the person he meant you to be.
