| In a National Geographic article about a fire in Yellowstone National Park, a forest ranger moving through the forest to assess the damage found a bird literally petrified in the ashes, perched on the ground at the base of a tree. After he used a stick to knock it over, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings. The mother had gathered them under her wings at the base of the tree to protect them from the smoke. When the blaze arrived she had stayed to protect them rather than fly to safety. |
