The Donkey's Tale
One day a farmer's donkey fell into an old well. The animal cried pitifully for hours while the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and useless, not worth the effort to pull him out, and the well was dried up and should be filled in anyway. So he asked his neighbors to come help him fill in the well. They all grabbed shovels and began throwing dirt down on the scared animal. The donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. In a few minutes the crying stopped. The farmer looked into the well and was astonished by what he saw. With every shovel of dirt hitting the donkey's back, he did something amazing; he shook it off and stepped up on the pile rising beneath him. As more and more dirt landed on the animal, he shook it down and stepped higher. This went on until the crowd watched the donkey step over the edge of the well and trot boldly away. The lesson for us? Life will shovel dirt on you, every kind of dirt. The trick to overcoming it is using the dirt to step up. We can get out of even the deepest well because people are willing to shovel dirt on us. Don't be surprised that you are seldom in a comfort zone; you are most often in the dirt. Shake it off and rise above it. Remember the five rules of happiness.
1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worry. 3. Live simply. 4. Give more. 5. Expect less.
Living well is not being everywhere or everything. Living well is being at peace with yourself.
