| The Defense Rests |
| An attorney took a case defending a man whom he thought might benefit from a character witness. So he asked old Mrs. Smith to come and testify on his behalf. But after she took the stand he lost control of the testimony. Trying to add to her credibility, he had asked her, "Mrs. Smith do you know me?" "Oh, yes, I know you alright. I had you in my class, and I never thought you'd amount to anything unless you lied your way into some cushy, dishonest job, and I see you found one." "I see," said the attorney, thinking how he might recover from such unexpected candor. "And tell me," he said finally, "Do you know the prosecuting attorney?" "Oh, yes, I know him better than you. Used to watch him for his mother when he was a baby. He's a bigger crook than you are." And suddenly the judge called both attorneys forward and said to them privately, "If either one of you asks Mrs. Smith if she knows me, I will kill you both." |
