| A young trooper pulled a farmer over and started to lecture him about going so slow that he was causing a hazard. His self-important manner was obviously meant to make the farmer uncomfortable. Finally, the trooper got around to writing out a ticket, and while he wrote he kept swatting at some flies buzzing in his face. To this the farmer said, "Having a problem with Circle Flies there, are ya?" To which the trooper said, "Well, yes, if that's what they are called, but I can't say I've ever heard of Circle Flies before." And to that the farmer said, "Well, Circle Flies are common on farms. You see, they're called Circle Flies because they're always found circling around the back end of a horse." The trooper said, "Oh," and resumed writing out the ticket. Then after a moment he paused and said, "Hey wait a minute, are you trying to call me a horse's rear end?" And the farmer said, "Oh no, officer. I have too much respect for law enforcement and police officers to even think about calling you something like that." The trooper said, "Well, that's a good thing," and resumed writing the ticket. ... as the farmer muttered, "But it's hard to fool them flies." |
