If you are a Civil War buff, re-enactor or historian, then you know the term sutler. A sutler is a merchant who
follows Civil War military units with goods to sell, and if you are fortunate he can also make music to entertain.
Sometimes he might bring vittles to cook up a welcome meal, but at the very least he'll have some hard tack or
smoked bacon with him that's not moldy.

August has been a Civil War historian all his life. Physical disability prevents him from field duty with a
re-enactor unit, so he serves as a sutler.

August is a Union Army veteran having served from '62 to '65. Really. No, not in the 1800s but in the 1900s
and during a different war. But he rose to the rank of permanent E-5 while serving, so now he calls himself a
sergeant but wears an officer's hat cord and comes in an officer's tent to show his wares in the field. And he
loves to visit units in their winter quarters. The music is better inside, and they often have some good food.

might not have been a Civil War. (unknown)
