A little history and a quick "how to" lesson
|
Chopsticks were in use in China in the 3rd Century BC. Today chopsticks
are used in Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, as well as China. Made usually of
bamboo or other wood, chopsticks are the world's second-most popular
method of conveying food to the mouth, the most popular is to use the
fingers.
Originally chopsticks were called "chu" meaning "help", but boatmen
thought the word sounded too much like their word for a slow or calm ship,
so they changed the name to "k'uai-tzu," meaning "something fast." The
name "chopsticks" came into being during the 19th century, when traders
translated the Chinese language into Pidgin English. The word "chop"
means "fast" as in the phrase "chop chop!"
Using chopsticks is easily learned. Hold both chopsticks together. Place one
chopstick between the thumb and index finger and the other chopstick
between the thumb and middle finger. Steady the bottom chopstick while
moving the upper chopstick with the index and middle finger to pick things
up. Use the thumb to keep the chopsticks comfortably in place.
